Rural implementation of school improvement initiatives often differs from implementation in urban settings, and many rural schools and districts often face distinct challenges when engaging the surrounding community in the work of turning around low-performing schools.

Hosted by the School Turnaround Learning Community (STLC) and Center on School Turnaround in partnership with the Reform Support Network, the second webinar in the series on Community Engagement in School Turnaround featured:

  • Adrian Watkins, Principal, Marvell-Elaine High School, Marvell-Elaine School District, rural Arkansas
  • Mandy Smoker Broaddus, Director of Indian Education, Montana Office of Public Instruction
  • Don Wetzel, Jr., American Indian Youth Development Coordinator,  Montana Office of Public Instruction 

The presenters discussed the issues confronted by rural schools and districts when engaging families and communities in school improvement efforts, and review strategies for meaningfully engaging key stakeholders in school turnaround. In addition, Evangelyn Visser, School Intervention Director, Amargosa Valley School, Nye County School District, Nevada, reflected on her experiences engaging families and communities in the work of turnaround. The webinar also explored collaboration strategies for schools, districts and states, including how state education agencies can enhance the capacity of rural districts to engage local communities in support of sustainable school improvement.
