Increasing the Duration and Improving the Quality of Reading Instruction for All Students USDOE

Because less than half of the students at Kit Carson International Academy (Nevada) were reaching proficiency in reading, school administrators sought to increase the amount of time dedicated to building students’ reading skills. Specifically, Carson increased its investments in the quality of reading instruction by (1) extending the school day to increase the amount of reading instruction and (2) using a set of common schoolwide approaches that target reading instruction and support teachers.
